“How Taboos Stole Christmas:  Reclaim What Is Ours”

Just like the Grinch, who stealthily crept into Whoville to steal Christmas, there are unseen forces at play in our healthcare system – the taboos that quietly rob us of our joy, peace, and happiness.

Every day, people flock to social media with pressing healthcare questions. They're proactive, eager for knowledge, but are we meeting them on their turf with the answers they need? Our healthcare system, fixated on metrics and outcomes, often overlooks these genuine concerns. It's not just about how many people are up-to-date with their screenings or medications; it's about the real, often unspoken, questions on their minds.

The taboos of sexual health, mental wellness, and other sensitive topics, whether blatant or subtle, are more than just topics we avoid: they are thieves of our inner peace. Consider a family friend, a college student we will name John, who's hesitant to discuss mental health for fear of “scaring” off his friends and girlfriend.  He actually sent me a message on Facebook last week after seeing my podcast.  Or a user I saw on Reddit, who has questions about her sexual health but doesn’t want to ask her friends, parents, or a doctor. These are not isolated cases; they are reflective of a broader issue.

The reality is, in this digital age, social media is often the first place where people express their health concerns. Scrolling through these platforms, the blatant undercurrent of anxiety and uncertainty literally has my brain thinking about this issue constantly. Part of it is the doctor in me, part of it is the mom in me, and part of it is my hopeless optimism.

Themes I have seen in the past month alone. You can see they are both random, yet common, trivial yet significant.

  • Work-Related Stress: Questions and confessions about handling immense pressure at work and its impact on mental health are common without a real approval to talk about it

  • Toxic Environments: Seeking advice on dealing with toxic relationships and environments, feeling the toll on their well being, but unsure of next steps

  • Academic Pressure: The overwhelming stress from school or college workloads is a recurring theme, often expressed with a sense of helplessness

  • HPV and its Implications: Concerns about HPV diagnoses are rampant, with many expressing fear and confusion – "Is my life over?" or "What does this mean for my future?"

  • Loneliness: Perhaps the most poignant are the admissions of loneliness, a clear indication of the need for better mental health support

These are not just queries; they are cries for help, a plea for understanding and guidance. Yet, our current healthcare system, regardless of one's insurance status, often falls short in offering effective, affordable, and convenient solutions to these very real problems. It's not just about the availability of services; it's about accessibility, understanding, and empathy.

In recognizing these voiced concerns, we begin the journey of bridging the gap between healthcare providers and the needs of people in this new world. By addressing these specific issues in our conversations and solutions, we move closer to a healthcare system that truly understands and caters to the diverse needs of its community.

It's time to break the ice. Healthcare professionals can start by creating an environment where no question is off-limits, where every concern is met with empathy and understanding. We need to empower patients, letting them know that their questions are valid, and their concerns are heard.

So how do we “give” back 'Christmas'? By addressing these taboos, we can restore what's been “stolen”. Imagine a world where John feels comfortable discussing his mental health and doesn’t have to worry about losing his friends, leading to early support and intervention, or where Emma receives the information she needs, empowering her to make informed health decisions that have such a huge impact on her future.  This is how we give back 'Christmas' – by bringing ease of well-being back into the conversation.

This is our collective challenge: to change the narrative around healthcare taboos. Whether you're a healthcare professional or someone who's ever felt unheard in these conversations, it's time to take a stand. Let's create a future where no concern is too small, and no question goes unanswered. Share your thoughts, experiences, and how you think we can make this change. Together, let's reclaim the joy stolen by healthcare taboos.  #JustAsk
