A Tale of Two Healthcare Realities: Bridging the Gap with the 'Just Ask' Movement

Updated: Jan 3

The Dichotomy in Modern Healthcare

Echoing the famous opening lines of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Tale of Two Cities,’ our current healthcare landscape is a study in contrasts. While we live in an age of unprecedented medical breakthroughs — a testament to ‘the best of times’ — we simultaneously grapple with widening disparities in healthcare access and affordability, reflective of ‘the worst of times.’ The dichotomy becomes even more pronounced as we progress in fields like AI and technology. While these advancements hold great promise, they also pose the risk of widening the gap between those with abundant healthcare access and those burdened by high costs and limited care. The pivotal question we face is how to harness these technological innovations to begin bridging this growing divide.

My journey from a high-achieving student and doctor to someone wrestling with internal conflicts mirrors a wider reality in healthcare. Despite ticking every societal checkbox, I was plagued by a discomfort not unlike the proverbial 'pea' under the princess's mattresses — a subtle yet persistent sense of something amiss. This decade-long introspection revealed how my personal health challenges were reflective of broader issues in the healthcare system.

This realization led me from private practice to community healthcare, where I saw that my experiences were not unique. Both patients and clinicians are often entangled in silent battles, overshadowed by societal taboos and misconceptions.

Thus, my story is not just personal but indicative of a general trend. We, in healthcare, frequently focus on surface achievements while ignoring the deeper, more complex issues that affect us all. This true gap in healthcare isn't just in the physical realm of accessibility; it lies deeper in the societal and personal taboos that surround health issues. These unspoken barriers prevent many from seeking the help they desperately need, from addressing mental health concerns to dealing with chronic illnesses.

Spend a moment on any health forum, and you'll see the evidence – countless anonymous posts seeking help for issues shrouded in secrecy and shame. These are not just queries; they are silent screams for understanding and support.

As we step into this New Year, a group of us, are starting the "Just Ask" movement. This initiative is about empowering ourselves and others to confront and discuss our health-related taboos openly. Whether it's an unspoken mental health issue, a misunderstood diagnosis, or a question you've been afraid to ask – now is the time to bring it into the light.

I invite you to join this movement. Share your concerns, ask your questions, no matter how small or big, on our designated Reddit thread (Creating a Reddit account (you choose to stay anonymous or not), is the easiest way to post and receive answers to your questions.) The other option is anonymously through this Just Ask google form.  We will post the response back into our other social media outlets, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn.

In embracing the "Just Ask" movement, we are not just breaking down our own barriers; we are paving the way for a more inclusive and understanding healthcare system.

This New Year, let's commit to changing the narrative, one taboos at a time.
